Kansas authorities rule shooting ‘tragic but justified’

Authorities ruled the death of a man in Alma, Kansas, as a “tragic but justified self-defense shooting,” according to local reports.

The Wabuansee County Attorney’s Office said no charges would be filed in the shooting death of 36-year-old Chad Thomas-Buckbee.

County Attorney Tim Liesmann said on Feb. 1, Thomas-Buckbee became aggressive toward a family member, who then tried to lock him out of the house. However, Thomas-Buckbee managed to get back inside the house, where he injured a family member before being shot.

In a news release, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said officers responded to the scene, described as a domestic incident, just before midnight. They found Thomas-Buckbee, who also lived at the house, was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Liesmann did not identify the shooter or the person who was injured, saying he was honoring a request from the family.
