NSSF Profile Q & A: U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa)

Editor’s Note: We are pleased to post the latest of our occasional Q&A features with an elected official who supports hunting and the shooting sports. NSSF thanks U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa) for agreeing to talk with us.

1) Who introduced you to hunting and the shooting sports?

Iowans are avid hunters and sportsmen, so it was just always part of the environment for me. I grew up around family and friends who loved to hunt and shoot, and so I have enjoyed it for a long time.

2) What was your most recent shooting sports/hunting experience?

I was able to go out to the range a lot more before I was sworn into Congress. Range visits are important to me to make sure I’m shooting safely and accurately. Now that I’m in Washington, I’m trying to find more time to get out to the range!

3) Describe your favorite shooting sports or hunting activity.

I love being able to get away with my family and spend time with them outdoors. I have two young sons, and it is important to me they know how to use firearms safely as they grow up. My husband and I are excited to be able to teach them and share shooting sports with them now that they are finally getting big enough to hold a gun by themselves!

4) Which piece of pending legislation related to the firearm industry is particularly important to you and why?

I recently introduced the RIFLE Act (H.R. 3101), legislation that would repeal the unconstitutional $200 transfer tax on firearms regulated under the National Firearms Act. This tax directly infringes on our Second Amendment rights. The rights of Americans cannot and should not be infringed by a federal financial burden. My bill would remove this unconstitutional and unfair tax that dictates gun ownership based on income level.

5) What do you see as the challenges and opportunities for hunters and shooting sports enthusiasts?

Gun control advocates are working overtime to demonize law abiding gun owners and impede on our Second Amendment rights. Those who craft gun grab policies fundamentally misunderstand the utility of guns, and harbor hostility toward those who own and use them. I’ll continue to push back on legislation that infringes on our right to keep and bear arms, but I also see this as an opportunity for hunting and shooting sports enthusiasts to help educate those around them about what responsible gun ownership means to us.
